A 30 to 40m charter yacht Vanuatu in the 2026 May-to-October dry season prices at $85,000 to $118,000 per week, plus a 30 percent APA, takes 8 to 10 guests, and bases out of Port Vila on Efate. The bracket sits below Fiji on price and well below French Polynesia, and the charter inventory in-country is thin: 1 to 3 yachts at Port Vila in the dry season, almost all of them repositioning from Australia or Fiji rather than locally based. Vanuatu's two anchor attractions, Tanna's active Mt Yasur volcano (the most accessible erupting volcano in the world) and the Espiritu Santo WWII wreck inventory (the President Coolidge and Million Dollar Point), bracket a 1,300 kilometre archipelago that very few charter clients see. The cyclone season runs November to April and the bracket does not work the islands in those months.

Why Vanuatu is a Melanesian expedition charter

Vanuatu is a sovereign republic of 83 islands strung from the Banks Group in the north to Aneityum in the south. The currency is the vatu, the languages on yacht agents and lodge staff are Bislama and English (with French in the Catholic-affiliated islands), and the regulatory regime is administered through the Vanuatu Maritime Authority in Port Vila. The destination is Melanesian rather than Polynesian, the cultural texture leans toward the village rather than the resort, and the tourism overlay is much lighter than in Fiji. A Vanuatu week is closer to an expedition than to a yacht-holiday week.

Bauerfield International Airport (VLI) at Port Vila handles direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Nadi, and Noumea. The Bauerfield-to-Port-Vila harbour drive is 15 minutes. Tanna and Espiritu Santo connect through domestic Air Vanuatu flights to Whitegrass (TAH) and Pekoa (SON) for guests joining the yacht inside the archipelago.

What the Vanuatu cruising area offers

Port Vila and Mele Bay. The Efate capital. The Port Vila harbour, the seafront market, the Mele cascades, and the Hideaway Island marine reserve. The 7-night week's embarkation and disembarkation centre.

Tanna and Mt Yasur. 200 kilometres south of Efate, accessed through Port Resolution Bay (the historic Captain Cook anchorage) on the windward coast. The active stromboli-class volcano runs eruption activity every 5 to 15 minutes and is the marquee Vanuatu shore excursion. The captain coordinates the 4x4 transfer to the crater rim through the Tanna tourism office. The Yasur week is the dominant Vanuatu booking.

Espiritu Santo and the President Coolidge. 250 kilometres north of Efate. The wartime troopship sunk in 1942 sits in 21 to 73 metres of water off Luganville, a guided dive in the 30 to 45 metre range, and is the world's most accessible large wreck dive. Million Dollar Point is the adjacent allied-equipment dump site. Champagne Beach and the Hog Harbour anchorage are the topside complements.

Pentecost, Ambrym, and the central islands. The Pentecost land-diving Nagol ceremony (April to June only), Ambrym's twin active volcanoes (Marum and Benbow), and Malekula's small Nambas custom villages. The expedition-grade Vanuatu charter, captain-led and tightly scheduled.

The Banks Group. Far northern Vanuatu (Vanua Lava, Mota Lava, Ureparapara). Sub-1 percent of the charter inventory ever works north of Espiritu Santo. The serious Melanesian week.

Weekly rates from Vanuatu in 2026

Ranges below are for the dry-season firm pricing before APA at 30 percent and gratuity at 12 percent. Fuel is at Vanuatu duty-paid pricing (lower than Tonga, higher than New Caledonia) and the customs and clearance overhead is light.

LOA bracket Motor yacht (low to high) Sailing yacht and motor-sailor (low to high)
30 to 33m $85K to $98K per week $68K to $88K per week
33 to 36m $95K to $110K per week $78K to $102K per week
36 to 40m $108K to $118K per week $90K to $114K per week

The June and July Australian school-holiday window runs at a 10 to 12 percent premium; September and October are the value windows and pair with calmer trade-wind conditions. We do not book Vanuatu November through April.

What this bracket does in Vanuatu

Quay berths. Port Vila harbour has stern-to capacity for the bracket up to 40m at Yachting World Vanuatu, with fuel, water, and provisions. Espiritu Santo's Luganville is at-anchor only; the bracket lies off Aore Island or Palikulo Bay. Tanna's Port Resolution is an open anchorage with no marine infrastructure.

Tenders. Two tenders is mandatory. The Tanna volcano transfer demands a fast tender that can land guests in Port Resolution Bay, and the Espiritu Santo wreck-and-beach rotation runs on tender movement. A jet-sled or kayak set is the standard add-on.

At-anchor stabilizers. Useful at Port Resolution (the open swell on the windward coast builds) and at Aore-Luganville (the building southeasterly afternoons). Not mandatory in the protected Port Vila harbour or in Hog Harbour.

Provisioning. Moderate. Port Vila carries adequate dry stores, some imported wine and meat (Australian provenance), and a strong local fresh market for tropical fruit, root vegetables, and reef fish. Beyond Port Vila the provisioning thins fast. Embarkation load is the solution and any north-bound itinerary should over-cater on dry stores and proteins.

Trip shapes that work

The 7-night Efate, Tanna, and Erromango round-trip. Embark Port Vila, one night Hideaway and Mele Bay, two nights southbound to Tanna with the Yasur evening rim hike, one night Erromango return, two nights Efate east-coast anchorages, return Port Vila. The standard Vanuatu week.

The 10-night Efate to Espiritu Santo one-way. Embark Port Vila, two nights Pentecost or Ambrym (April to June for Nagol), two nights Malekula custom villages, three nights Espiritu Santo (Aore base, President Coolidge dive day, Champagne Beach, Million Dollar Point), one-way disembark Luganville. The full Vanuatu charter and the booking we would recommend for clients with the time.

The 14-night Efate to the Banks Group expedition. The serious Melanesian charter. Captain's relationships with the customary land authorities in the northern islands are the gating factor and the booking will need a 12-month lead.

What this bracket does not do well in Vanuatu

The cyclone-season week. November to April is closed.

The 5-star resort overlay. Vanuatu's resort inventory is thin and is not the reason charter clients go. Charter clients who want the resort-paired week book Fiji's Mamanucas or the Maldives. Vanuatu is the working-village and active-volcano week.

The pure-luxury sterile week. The destination texture is rural-Melanesian and the captain leans into it. Charter clients who want the polished and pre-planned week, in our experience, are happier in French Polynesia or New Caledonia. Vanuatu rewards charter clients who are happy to spend a day on Tanna in the back of a tribal Land Cruiser.

What we would book

For two couples, seven nights in mid-July: a 33m motor yacht with two tenders and at-anchor stabilizers, embark Port Vila, southbound rotation with the Tanna Yasur evening as the centrepiece, return Port Vila. Budget: $98K plus APA, all-in roughly $144K. Booking lead time: 9 months.

For a family of 8, ten nights in early September: a 38m motor yacht with full tender complement and dive compressor on board, embark Port Vila, one-way to Luganville with three nights on Santo and a captain who has the President Coolidge dive day rehearsed. Budget: $148K plus APA plus one-way fee, all-in roughly $218K. Booking lead time: 11 months.
