A 30 to 40m charter yacht Tonga in the 2026 July-to-October whale season prices at $94,000 to $128,000 per week, plus a 28 percent APA, takes 8 to 10 guests, and bases out of Neiafu Harbour in the Vava'u group on the northern Tongan island arc. The Kingdom of Tonga holds 169 islands across 700,000 square kilometres of ocean, but the practical charter cruising area for the bracket is concentrated in two groups: Vava'u, with 50 named islands inside a 25 kilometre arc and the Port of Refuge at Neiafu as the base, and Ha'apai, 100 kilometres south. The cyclone season runs November through April. The whale-swim season is the actual charter season: July 1 through October 31, when humpback whales return from Antarctica to calve in Vava'u's protected waters. The bracket holds 2 to 4 yachts at Neiafu in any given week in the whale window and a 30 to 40m yacht in Tonga is rare; most South Pacific bracket inventory works Fiji and crosses for the whale season only.
Why Tonga is a whale-season charter
The Tonga charter case rests on one biological fact: Vava'u is one of two places in the world (the other is Mo'orea in French Polynesia and the smaller window at Niue) where supervised in-water swimming with humpback whales is legal and operated. The window runs July to October and the bracket bookings track it almost exactly. Charter clients who want the Tonga trip without the whale season cannot get the trip; outside the window the destination reverts to a small-fleet, low-traffic Polynesian cruising area and the bracket inventory leaves.
Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) on the main island of Tongatapu handles connections from Auckland, Sydney, and Nadi. Vava'u's Lupepau'u Airport (VAV) takes the connecting flight from Tongatapu and from Nadi on the seasonal schedule. The Nadi-to-Vava'u flight is the standard charter access; the Auckland-to-Tongatapu-to-Vava'u routing is the alternative.
What the Tonga cruising area offers
Vava'u group. The marquee. Port of Refuge at Neiafu (the marina town), Mariner's Cave (Hunga, swim-through only), Swallows Cave (Kapa), the Hunga lagoon, Vaka'eitu, the Coral Garden snorkel at Mounu, and the humpback whale anchorages off Fonua'one'one. The cruising area is compact; 50 islands inside a 25 kilometre arc means short-run inter-anchorage transits and a slow charter pace, which is the trip's signature.
Ha'apai group. 100 kilometres south of Vava'u. Lifuka and Foa as the main inhabited islands; Uoleva for the sandbar anchorage; Kelefesia and Tofua for the volcano and remote-anchorage cases. The Ha'apai is wilder than Vava'u and lower-traffic; the bracket runs Ha'apai on 10-night and longer charters only.
Tongatapu and 'Eua. The main island group at the southern end. Land-side cultural texture (Mu'a royal tombs, Fua'amotu), the Hufangalupe natural arch, and the Eua hike. Charter clients fly through Tongatapu but the bracket does not anchor as a charter base there.
The Niuas. 300 kilometres north of Vava'u. Niuatoputapu and Tafahi. The far-northern stop, reached only on a 14-night expedition with the appropriate captain.
Weekly rates from Tonga in 2026
Ranges below are for the whale-season firm pricing before APA at 28 percent and gratuity at 12 percent. Tonga whale-swim permits, marine park fees, and the licensed-guide costs run through APA. The whale-swim guide requirement is non-negotiable; bookings without the in-water guide are not whale-swim charters.
| LOA bracket | Motor yacht (low to high) | Sailing yacht and motor-sailor (low to high) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 to 33m | $94K to $106K per week | $74K to $96K per week |
| 33 to 36m | $102K to $118K per week | $84K to $112K per week |
| 36 to 40m | $116K to $128K per week | $94K to $124K per week |
The peak whale-swim window (August 1 to September 30) runs at a 12 to 15 percent premium on the base. The July and October shoulders are the value windows. The November to June period is closed for the bracket.
What this bracket does in Tonga
Quay berths. Neiafu's Port of Refuge has stern-to capacity for the bracket up to 36m at the Vava'u Marina extension on captain-coordinated bookings; 36 to 40m anchors out in the protected Port of Refuge inner harbour at 10m to 16m. There is no superyacht-grade marina infrastructure equivalent to Port Denarau or Papeete.
Anchorages. The Vava'u group runs as numbered anchorages 1 through 42 in the local cruising guide. The marquee positions are 7 (Port Maurelle, the standard first night), 11 (Hunga lagoon), 16 (Vaka'eitu, the Coral Garden), 26 (Tapana), and the open whale-watching anchorages off Fonua'one'one. Ha'apai positions run by name (Uoleva sandbar, Kelefesia, Foa).
Tenders. Two tenders is the minimum. One is the whale-swim tender; the in-water swim is staged off a guide-skipper tender, not the mothership. The licensed guide must be on the swim tender at all times.
At-anchor stabilizers. Useful at the open Hunga and whale-anchorage positions. The inner Port of Refuge anchorage is calm.
Provisioning. Limited. Neiafu's Marina Mart and the Saturday market cover fresh fish, fruit, root vegetables, and basic dry stores at low quality and high price. European wine, dairy, and meat is flown in from Nadi or Auckland through the yacht agent on a 14-day advance order. The Tongan rum (Tonga Bush Rum, Tonga Royal) is the regional differentiator alongside the local kava and the Mounu Island fresh-caught yellowfin.
Trip shapes that work
The 7-night Vava'u whale-swim round-trip. Embark Neiafu, four whale-swim mornings at the Fonua'one'one and Hunga positions with afternoon anchorages at Hunga lagoon, Mounu, and Vaka'eitu, three nights at the cultural and snorkel anchorages, one return Neiafu. The standard Tonga whale charter and 80 percent of bookings.
The 10-night Vava'u and Ha'apai round-trip. Embark Neiafu, four nights Vava'u whale-swim, four nights southwest through the Ha'apai group (Uoleva, Kelefesia, Lifuka), two nights return. The deeper Tonga charter for repeat charter clients.
The 14-night Vava'u to Ha'apai to Tongatapu one-way. Embark Neiafu, three nights Vava'u, four nights Ha'apai, three nights Tongatapu and 'Eua, disembark Tongatapu. The deep Tonga expedition, useful for charter clients who want the full archipelago and accept the longer interanchorage transits. Run only on yachts with the Ha'apai and Tongatapu local-knowledge captain.
What does not work at this bracket in Tonga
The non-whale-season week. November through June is closed. The destination collapses outside the whale window.
The deep-resort week. Tonga's land hospitality is thin. The Mounu Island Resort and the Treasure Island Eueiki Resort are the high points; outside those the bracket runs at sea and uses Neiafu town for restocking, not cultural depth.
The pure-diving week. Tonga has good diving (the Mariner's Cave, the Coral Garden) but the marquee South Pacific diving is in French Polynesia and the Solomons, not Tonga. Specialist diving weeks should base in the Tuamotus.
What we would book
For a couples-only 7-night Vava'u whale-swim week in late August: a 36m motor yacht with at-anchor stabilizers, two tenders including a dedicated whale-swim tender, a captain who has the Vava'u whale-anchorage routine in his logbook, and the licensed Tongan whale-swim guide booked through the captain's agent. Budget: $122K plus APA, all-in roughly $176K. Booking lead time: 14 months for the peak window.
For a family of 8, a 10-night Vava'u and Ha'apai charter in mid-September: a 33m motor yacht with full tender complement, the Neiafu inner-harbour anchorage as base, and the captain who has worked at least two Tongan whale seasons. Budget: $146K plus APA, all-in roughly $212K. Booking lead time: 12 months.
