The July to August Australian and New Zealand school-holiday window runs at a 12 to 15 percent premium. The Christmas-New Year window is the cyclone shoulder and closed for the bracket. The September to October shoulder is the value window and tends to be the local-Kanak captain's preferred window.

Quay berths. Port Moselle (the main harbour) has stern-to capacity for the bracket up to 38m on captain-coordinated bookings. Port du Sud is the alternative and handles the bracket up to 40m on the outer pontoons. The Noumea Yacht Club at Baie de l'Orphelinat handles smaller yachts. Ile des Pins has no superyacht marina; the bracket anchors in Kuto or Kanumera Bay.

Anchorages. Kuto Bay (the marquee Ile des Pins), Kanumera Bay (the western Ile des Pins beach), Phare Amedee (the day stop), Lifou Jinek (the marquee Loyalty diving), Ouvea Mouli (the marquee Loyalty beach). All sand at 8m to 14m. The reef-pass navigation through the Havannah Pass demands a captain who has the local passes in his logbook.

Tenders. Two tenders is standard. The lagoon distances are moderate (20 to 60 kilometres between anchorages) and a fast tender for the Phare Amedee and Ile des Pins runs is useful.

At-anchor stabilizers. Useful but not mandatory; the lagoon protects most positions. The Loyalty Islands' open eastern coast benefits from at-anchor stabilizers on a building southeasterly day.

Provisioning. Strong. Noumea's Port Moselle market and the Casino and Géant supermarkets carry full French dry stores, dairy, wine, and meat at French-territory pricing (similar to Papeete and Reunion). Fresh fish from the Port Moselle morning market. The Pacific Tropical Lager, the local rum, and the Kanak yam, taro, and bougna preparations are the regional differentiators. The Loyalty Islands provisioning is from the embarkation load; no significant re-supply on the eastern leg.

Where the bracket struggles in New Caledonia

The cyclone-season week. November through April is closed. We do not book New Caledonia November to April.

New Caledonia is the French-Melanesian middle ground; it rewards charter clients who want the lagoon scale and the French infrastructure together.

The pure-diving week. New Caledonia has the world's second-longest barrier reef and the diving is real, but the Loyalty Islands' diving is the marquee, not the lagoon proper. Specialist diving weeks should base in Lifou or push to the Tuamotus.
