Menorca is the quietest of the four main Balearic day-charter markets, with roughly 60 licensed commercial yachts above 14m operating out of Mahon and Ciutadella in 2026. Peak season day rates run from €1,800 for a 14m open motor cruiser to €11,000 for a 26m motor yacht with chef. The fleet is smaller than Ibiza or Mallorca, the captains know every cove on the south coast, the biosphere reserve rules are real, and the day rate per meter is the lowest in the Balearics. This piece covers the two bases, the licensed operator shortlist, the south-coast anchoring rules, and the operators we pass on.

Why Menorca is different
Three things to know about Menorca before you book.
First, the day-charter season is short. The reliable window is mid-June through mid-September. Outside that, the north-coast tramontana makes the day uncomfortable for any anchorage exposed to the north, which is most of them. May, late September, and October day charters are technically available but the weather rejection rate runs at 20 to 35%.
Second, the south-coast calas are some of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean. They are also small, narrow, and protected. Cala Macarella, Macarelleta, Turqueta, Mitjana, and Cala Galdana have Posidonia seagrass beds covering most of the cove floor, mooring buoy fields capped at 8 to 18 buoys depending on the cala, and per-zone day caps administered by the Menorca biosphere reserve authority. Anchoring outside designated zones is fined. The buoys book out by 10:30 most July and August mornings.
Third, the Menorca fleet skews smaller than Ibiza or Mallorca. The 22m-and-under band is well served. Above 24m, inventory is thin and most of it is foreign-flagged yachts repositioning to Menorca mid-season rather than a permanent local fleet. If you want a 28m+ for a Menorca day, book from Mallorca and accept the 2-hour each-way transit, or book a weekly charter with Menorca as one of the days.
Mahon as a base
Mahon (Maó) is on the east of the island. The natural deep-water harbour is one of the longest in Europe. Marina Menorca, Marina Port Mahon, and Cala Rata are the licensed commercial berths. The day-charter fleet here is the larger of the two bases (40 to 45 yachts), with the most 18-26m inventory and the largest chef-equipped subset.
Day routes from Mahon split four ways:
- South down to Cala Mitjana, Cala Galdana, Cala Turqueta, and Macarella (3 to 4 hours of transit and anchoring time, full day required).
- East up to Cala Mesquida, Cala Presili, and the small calas near the lighthouse at Favaritx (calm-weather only, 5 to 6 hour day).
- Inside Mahon harbour for a 3 to 4 hour tour with lunch at Es Castell or Cala Sant Esteve.
- North up to Fornells (long day, calm weather only).
The Mahon south-coast day is the most popular booking. Captains know the buoy field administrators by name, which is the difference between getting a buoy at Macarella in August and not.
Ciutadella as a base
Ciutadella is on the west, the small historic port. The marina is small. The licensed day-charter fleet is 15 to 18 yachts in the 14-22m band, mostly motor cruisers, with two or three sailing yachts and one or two catamarans. No major chef-equipped 24m+ inventory.
Day routes from Ciutadella:
- North up to Cala Morell, Cala Algaiarens, and La Vall (1 hour transit, 6 to 7 hour day).
- South to Cala en Turqueta and Macarella via Cap d'Artrutx (the southwest tip), 90 minutes each way, full day.
- A west-coast and north-coast loop in calm weather.
The Ciutadella-to-Macarella south-coast day is feasible but the transit out around Cap d'Artrutx adds an hour each way over the Mahon equivalent. Ciutadella works best for the north-coast routes and for clients staying on the west of the island.
Rate bands for 2026
Peak July and August, per day, in euros, private charter with captain, crew, fuel at standard cruising, basic provisions. Chef +€300 to +€600 where available.
- 14m to 16m motor cruiser. Mahon €1,800 to €2,800. Ciutadella €1,700 to €2,600.
- 16m to 18m motor yacht or sailing yacht. Mahon €2,700 to €4,000. Ciutadella €2,500 to €3,800.
- 18m to 22m motor yacht. Mahon €3,800 to €6,000. Ciutadella €3,500 to €5,500.
- 22m to 24m motor yacht. Mahon €5,800 to €8,500. Ciutadella limited inventory.
- 24m to 26m motor yacht. Mahon €8,000 to €11,000. Ciutadella thin or unavailable.
Shoulder months 20-25% below. Low season 35-40% below where available.
Mahon operators worth booking
Three Mahon-based operators we work with.
Menorca Boats. Mixed fleet of 16m to 22m motor yachts and two sailing yachts, multi-year captains, transparent quote sheet that itemises fuel, buoy fees, and chef separately. The booking team responds quickly. The 20m motor yacht in their fleet (captain since 2018) is the right Mahon-side call for a south-coast day at €4,800 to €6,000 peak.
Yachts Menorca. Newer fleet (median build 2019), positioned as premium, with chef on the 22m+ inventory. Rates land at the top of band. Service is consistent. The 24m motor yacht is the call for groups of 8 to 10 who want a chef-equipped Mahon day with a south-coast lunch ashore.
Pollux Charter. Smaller operator, owner-operator model, fleet of 18m to 22m, captain tenure is long. Lower headline rate, less marketing, more familiarity with the buoy field administrators. The right call for clients who want a less-corporate booking experience.
Ciutadella operators worth booking
The Ciutadella shortlist is shorter.
Menorca Cruising. Fleet of 16m to 22m motor and sailing yachts, the only commercial catamaran (a 15m Lagoon) for day charter out of Ciutadella, and the deepest knowledge of the north-coast cala routes (Cala Morell, Cala Algaiarens, La Vall). The right call for a north-coast day.
Charter Ciutadella. Smaller fleet, more sailing yachts, mostly 14m to 18m. The right call for a north-coast sailing day with lunch ashore at Es Tancat de Sa Torre or one of the Cala Morell beach restaurants.
What we pass on
Three Menorca operators we have looked at and chosen not to list.
- One Mahon-based operator advertises yachts they re-broker, similar to the Palma pattern. The price you pay is 15-25% above market for the same yacht booked direct. We checked through the Govern Balear marine register.
- One operator in the Mahon Naveta marina cluster runs older fleet with visible maintenance backlog. The yachts are licensed but the captain rotation is high and the chef quality is inconsistent.
- One Ciutadella commercial operator runs party-day formats with overloaded passenger counts. We do not list them.
We have also passed on the smaller north-coast operators based at Fornells. The Fornells fleet is mostly under 12m and runs short half-day trips. That is a different product (closer to a fishing-village boat ride than a yacht day charter) and we cover it differently.
Biosphere reserve anchoring: the rules in 2026
The Menorca biosphere reserve covers the entire island and its territorial waters. For day-charter purposes:
- Posidonia beds are protected. Anchoring on Posidonia is fined €600 to €60,000 commercial.
- The south-coast calas (Macarella, Macarelleta, Turqueta, Mitjana, Galdana) have mooring buoy fields administered by the Consell Insular de Menorca. Buoys are pay-per-use, €40 to €90 per day depending on cala and yacht length. Capacity is capped per cala. Booking is first-come-first-served from 08:00 morning of.
- The Albufera des Grau natural park on the east coast is off-limits to commercial day charter.
- Cala Macarelleta has a strict zero-anchor zone outside the buoys.
Licensed commercial operators handle the buoy booking. If your captain says "we will see what's available when we get there" rather than confirming a buoy reservation, expect to be turned away from Macarella on a peak August day. The competent operators reserve buoys the morning of or the night before.
The honest yacht-size recommendation
For most Menorca day-charter parties of four to eight, the sweet spot is 18m to 22m. Big enough for a chef option and a proper anchorage swim setup, small enough to take a Macarelleta buoy, and at €3,800 to €6,000 peak season the rate is a third of an equivalent Saint-Tropez day for similar product.
A 24-26m for the same group is a comfort upgrade but the south-coast calas do not reward yachts over 24m. The buoy field positioning means a 26m anchors further from the beach and the tender ride to shore for lunch at Macarella becomes a four-minute commute rather than a one-minute hop.
A 14-16m motor cruiser is the budget call for groups of four. The yacht is small, the day is more functional than indulgent, and the price for a south-coast Menorca day at €1,800 to €2,800 is the lowest in the Balearics for licensed product.
Lunch ashore: the short list
The south-coast cala restaurants are limited. Cala Galdana has Restaurante Es Forum and Sa Cova de Galdana. Cala Macarella has the Cova d'en Xoroi cliff club, which is a sundown drink rather than a lunch stop. Cala Mitjana has no restaurant on the beach. The east coast offers Mongofra and Cala Mesquida with one beach club each.
Most yacht-charter clients do lunch aboard for the south-coast day and put dinner ashore in Mahon at Café Balear or Es Tast de na Silvia. The Ciutadella day usually puts lunch ashore at Cala Morell or includes a stop at Café Balear in Ciutadella old town.

How to book
Book 30 to 60 days out for shoulder season and 60 to 90 days out for July and August. Confirm in writing: rate, included crew, fuel, chef, buoy fees, embarkation marina, and named captain. Verify the operator against the Govern Balear charter license register. The competent Menorca operators welcome the question. The ones we have passed on do not.
