A Cancun day charter on a credible 50ft to 75ft yacht runs $2,400 to $7,500 per yacht per day all-in for an 8-hour day with 6 to 12 guests, shoulder season as of April 2026. The market is large, fragmented, and confusing because the Cancun day-charter brand is used by operators across three different zones: the Cancun Hotel Zone marinas, Puerto Cancun Marina on the mainland north side, and the Marina El Cid in Puerto Morelos 35 minutes south. Each zone has its own fleet and its own primary cruising direction. Picking the right zone matters more than picking the yacht.

Two facts to anchor every booking.

First, "Cancun day charter" almost always means an Isla Mujeres day. Isla Mujeres is the 4-mile island 8 nautical miles north of the Hotel Zone. A 30-minute run on a credible 55ft+ yacht lands you at the lee-side beach clubs or the MUSA underwater sculpture park. The Cozumel side requires Puerto Morelos as a base; the run from Cancun proper is too long for a day charter.

Second, the high-volume catamaran "party cruise" market at the Hotel Zone marinas is the dominant product for the tourist segment. The private day charter market is a thinner slice on top of that. There is meaningful overlap in fleet (some operators run both), and the gap in service between a private booking and a shared "VIP catamaran" booking is large enough to matter even when the yachts are similar.

The three zones

Cancun Hotel Zone marinas (Marina Aquaworld, Marina Hacienda del Mar, Marina Las Perlas). Multiple small marinas along the Hotel Zone's lagoon side. Most credible private day yachts depart from one of these. Direct access via the Punta Cancun cut to Isla Mujeres in 30 minutes. Hotel Zone hotels are 5 to 20 minutes by taxi.

Puerto Cancun Marina (mainland side). Larger and more recent municipal marina north of the Hotel Zone, near Cancun town. Larger and newer yachts including the 70ft+ tier. Slightly faster transit to Isla Mujeres because the cut is shorter. Taxi from Hotel Zone hotels 15 to 25 minutes.

Marina El Cid (Puerto Morelos). 35 minutes south of Cancun by road. The right base for charter clients staying at the Riviera Maya end (Playa del Carmen, Tulum direction). Cruising radius reaches Cozumel and Puerto Morelos reef. Different fleet to the Hotel Zone product.

Puerto Aventuras (60 minutes south). Smaller marina with a small fleet. Some private day yachts. The cruising radius reaches the reef but the choice of credible yachts is thinner.

The six operators we route to

These are operators we have either chartered, brokered, or whose fleet condition we have inspected within the last 12 months.

Maita Charters. Mid-size fleet at Marina Aquaworld including a 60ft Sea Ray and a 70ft Azimut. The most consistent product on the Hotel Zone side. Dispatch reliable, crew turnover below average. Pricing 10 to 15% above the median.

Cancun Boat Trips (the private division). Larger fleet including a 75ft motor yacht and a 65ft catamaran. Strong on the family day. The catamaran for 10 to 12 person groups. Confirm "exclusive use" explicitly because the brand runs shared product as well.

Yates Cancun. Smaller operator with a 62ft Sunseeker and a 55ft Princess at Puerto Cancun. Higher rate band but cleaner fleet. Right for a couple or a 4-person group who prefers a smaller, better-maintained yacht over a larger less-recent one.

Aquaworld Marina (private fleet). The marina operator runs its own private fleet alongside the high-volume shared product. The private fleet includes a 58ft Searay and a 60ft Cabos. Acceptable mid-tier product, useful for last-minute bookings.

El Cid Yacht Club (Puerto Morelos). Mid-size catamaran-led fleet at El Cid. The 60ft Lagoon is the pick for the reef day. Right base for Riviera Maya-staying guests.

Tequila Sunrise (Isla Mujeres-based). Owner-operator with a 70ft motor yacht and a 55ft catamaran. Charters out of Isla Mujeres rather than Cancun. The advantage is a captain who actually knows the Isla reefs and beach club arrangements. Pickup is from Hotel Zone marinas by tender.

Passed on

Four categories we route charter clients away from:

Shared "VIP catamaran" operators marketed as private. The most common Cancun marketplace problem. A "private VIP catamaran" at $89 per person is a shared catamaran with 60 other guests. Always require "exclusive use" with a maximum-passenger cap in writing.

Hotel-affiliated catamaran cruises. Many large Hotel Zone resorts package a "private catamaran day" with their concierge. The product is almost always a shared cruise on a hotel-branded boat. Verify the operator and the exclusive-use status before paying.

Puerto Aventuras small operators with no marina presence. A subset of Puerto Aventuras operators list on marketplaces with no actual berth or registered operator name. The yacht photographed is rarely the yacht delivered. Pass.

Operators that quote in MXN with USD margin loaded at conversion. Insist on the actual delivery currency at booking. Pay by bank transfer if the conversion rate matters.

Specific yacht passes for 2026. The 65ft "Pacific" charter listed at Hotel Zone marinas has had reported air-conditioning failures in the late-July heat over two consecutive seasons.. Until evidence of overhaul, route to the Puerto Cancun-based 65ft Princess instead.

The credible day routes

The classic Isla Mujeres day from the Hotel Zone (8 hours). Depart marina 09:30. Run 30 minutes to Isla Mujeres lee side. Anchor or moor at North Beach or Playa Norte for swim and beach club (2.5 hours including lunch ashore or aboard). Run to MUSA underwater sculpture park for snorkelling (60 minutes, 90 minutes including swim). Optional stop at Garrafon Reef for snorkelling. Return to marina 17:30. This is the canonical day.

The MUSA-focused day (6 hours). For diving-and-snorkelling-focused groups. Depart 10:00, MUSA for 2 hours, lunch at anchor or beach club, Manchones Reef for the afternoon. Return 16:00.

The reef-focused day from Puerto Morelos (8 hours). Depart El Cid Marina 09:00. Run 10 minutes to Puerto Morelos reef (a UNESCO-protected reef section). Snorkel and dive (2 hours). Beach club lunch ashore at Catalonia or local beach club. Afternoon at the reef's southern section. Return 17:00. This is the right day for repeat charter clients who have done Isla Mujeres.

The half day plus Isla (4 hours). Depart 10:00 or 13:00. Run to Isla Mujeres, beach club stop for 90 minutes, snorkel stop, return. Right format for a hotel-day add-on.

What MUSA actually is

MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte) is an underwater sculpture park created in 2009 between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Over 500 submerged sculptures at depths of 3 to 8 metres. The shallow Manchones field is reachable by snorkellers from a yacht anchor. The deeper Salon and Punta Sam fields are dive-only. From a day-charter perspective, the snorkel field is the right product. Set the expectation that the sculptures are covered in coral growth (deliberately, to build artificial reef) and the photographs will not look like the early-installation pictures.

Sargassum, the seasonal variable

Sargassum is a brown seaweed that has bloomed heavily on the Cancun-Riviera Maya coast in some years (notably 2018, 2022, 2023). The seaweed accumulates on east-facing beaches and creates significant coastal mess. The lee side of Isla Mujeres (the west side) usually stays clearer, which is one reason it remains the credible day-charter destination during sargassum-heavy weeks.

Forecast resources: the Cancun Sargassum Monitoring Network publishes daily beach status. As of April 2026 the season is forecast as moderate. May through August is the typical peak. If sargassum heavily affects your dates, the credible day shifts toward the MUSA snorkel and the lee-side beach clubs rather than the east-coast beaches.

Weather and the booking calendar

November to April. The peak season. Daytime temperatures 25 to 31 degrees Celsius. Sea state generally workable on the Hotel Zone side; offshore can build to 1 to 2 metres in the December and January northers. Book 2 to 6 weeks out for weekends. US Thanksgiving, Christmas to New Year, and Spring Break (mid-March to mid-April) need 6 to 12 weeks lead time and rates run 25 to 50% above shoulder.

May to October. Off-peak with hurricane risk. Temperatures 30 to 34 degrees and humid. Hurricane season Atlantic is June to November. Cancellation risk is highest August and September. Rates drop 25 to 40%. Booking 24 to 72 hours.

The 2026 specific note: the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season was active with multiple storms threatening the Yucatan. The 2026 forecast as of late April is currently average. The northers risk in December and January is the underrated variable: a 2-day strong north can shut down the day-charter market when sea state on the offshore exceeds the captain's comfort threshold.

What the rate buys

A credible Cancun day charter quote should include: fuel for the stated route, captain and crew, beer and soft drinks, basic snacks and fruit, swim and snorkel equipment, marina fees, and standard insurance. It should not include: tequila and premium spirits, upgraded catering ($50 to $150 per person), beach club covers ($30 to $80 per person at the higher-end clubs), or jet ski rental ($120 to $200 per hour per ski).

Gratuity convention: 15 to 20% of charter cost, paid in USD or pesos to the captain at end of day.

How Cancun compares

Cancun sits at the entry-tier global day-charter price band, similar to Cabo and slightly above Phuket. The headline weakness is fleet recency: most Cancun day yachts are 10 to 20 years old and refit quality varies. The headline strength is the destination: Isla Mujeres in lee-side conditions with a credible beach club lunch is one of the easiest day-charter products in the Caribbean.

For a weekly charter from a Cancun base the product is thin. The serious western Caribbean weeklies position out of Belize or further south. Cancun is principally a day-charter and shore-program product paired with a Hotel Zone or Riviera Maya stay.

FAQ

Where do Cancun day charters depart from?

Three principal zones: the Cancun Hotel Zone marinas, Puerto Cancun Marina on the mainland north side, and Marina El Cid in Puerto Morelos. The right choice depends on hotel location and direction of cruise (Isla Mujeres versus Cozumel side).

Is Isla Mujeres the right day-charter destination from Cancun?

Yes for first-time charter clients. Isla Mujeres is 30 minutes from the Hotel Zone marinas and offers credible swim stops, a beach club lunch, and the MUSA underwater sculpture park. Repeat clients should consider Puerto Morelos reef from El Cid Marina or further south.

What is sargassum and does it affect day charters?

Sargassum is a seaweed that blooms in the western Caribbean. The Cancun-Riviera Maya coast had heavy years in 2022 and 2023, lighter in 2024 and 2025. Sargassum affects beach landings more than yacht days. The lee side of Isla Mujeres usually stays clearer.

What is the gratuity convention?

15 to 20% of charter cost, paid in USD or pesos to the captain at end of day. Higher than Mediterranean norms because of US-tipping cultural influence.

Can a Cancun day charter reach Cozumel?

From the Hotel Zone, no. The Cozumel crossing is 40 nautical miles and consumes the day with transit. From Marina El Cid in Puerto Morelos the crossing is shorter but still 25 nautical miles. For Cozumel, charter from Puerto Aventuras or Playa del Carmen, or do a 2-day overnight rather than a day.

Are private day charters worth the premium over the shared catamaran market?

Yes if the group is 6+ guests with a defined itinerary. The exclusive-use yacht costs roughly 4 to 8 times the per-person shared rate but the routing, pace, food, and crew attention scale with it.
